Faceless People With Moving Mechanical Parts in Their Heads (4 фото)
Belgrade, Serbia artist Milos “Sholim” Rajkovic has created a surreal collection of animated GIFs showcasing faceless people with moving mechanical parts packed into their heads. In an interview with The Daily Dot, Milos shared that the models he used his GIFs were “politicians, corporate people, or just pretty faces from the commercials that we watched for hundreds of times during a day and who have no identity and personality.”

Hidden 19th Century Fore-Edge Paintings Found on the Pages of a Book (8 фото)
While most of us know that some of the greatest treasures can be found in books, turns out that sometimes they also appear on the fore-edges of the pages. Recently Colleen Theisen shared a gif she made, showing an amazing example of fore-edge painting on the side of the book from 1873. The painting was found on the edge of Robert Mudie’s book Autumn at the Special Collections & University Archives at the University of Iowa. Fore-edge painting dates back to 1650′s, and is a technique when a picture is drawn on the edge of the book pages. Sometimes the image can be seen when the book is closed, sometimes the pages have to be slightly fanned out.

Surreal Floating Room Sculptures by Leandro Erlich (8 фото)
Like a scene from a fantasy movie, a dilapidated room that appears to have been literally ripped out of a building remains suspended in mid air above Nantes, France. Its walls were torn apart, revealing bricks below the plaster, and wood floors reveal the joists inside. The floating room is accessible via a ladder. The gravity defying surreal installation is the work of Argentinean artist Leandro Erlich. The large-scale piece, called “Monte-meubles – L’ultime déménagement” (literally - The Furniture Lift – The Ultimate Moving Out), was created for the biannual Le Voyage a Nantes, an art festival which turns the entire French city into an art gallery.

Trees Are Framed by Giant Canvas Backdrops in Photo Series (3 фото)
South Korean artist Myoung Ho Lee hangs enormous canvases behind trees, creating a real world backdrop for his photo series, “Tree.” Lee digitally removes the cranes and other equipment used to erect the canvases for an effect that is both simple and surreal. He has been taking the photos around the South Korean countryside for the past ten years. For more on Lee’s series, see this New York Times interactive feature.

Colonel Meow Sets Guinness World Record For Cat With the Longest Fur (1 фото + 1 видео)
Colonel Meow, a Himalayan Persian cat who lives in Los Angeles, California, has set a Guinness World Record for “cat with the longest fur.” Three independent vets measured his fur at an average of 22.89 centimeters, or nine inches. Colonel Meow’s new record will be featured in the Guinness World Records 2014 book, which is set to release on September 12th. “We already knew that he was the best cat in the world, but to be recognised in the Guinness World Records book takes it to the next level,” Colonel Meow’s owner Anne Marie Avey said.

What “trash” and “garbage” meant before they were synonyms (1 видео)
For many English speakers, the words “trash” and “garbage” are virtually interchangeable. If there’s a difference at all, it’s a subtle one rather than the words having completely different definitions. But that wasn’t always the case…

Hyper Realistic Paintings by Simon Hennessey (10 фото)
Simon Hennessey is a Birmingham, UK based artist who paints realistic images of famous landmarks around the world as reflected in the lenses of a pair of sunglasses. Like most hyper-realistic painters, Hennessey’s process starts with the camera. But instead of simply copying the photograph, the artist proceeds to add or remove details, depth, add textures, form and color values, thereby creating an illusion of a reality not seen in any photographic source. “My Paintings therefore appear clearer and more distinct than a photograph. constructing my own interpretations of a reality results in blurring the boundaries of what is real and what is made up,” said Simon Hennessey. “I use the camera only as a source to assist me with gathering information.”

Guy Turns His Old Bike Into Pedal-Powered Treehouse Elevator (3 фото + 1 видео)
If you decide to live in a tree house, prepare yourself that the idea will also have some downsides to it as well. Ethan Schlussler from Sandpoint, Idaho eventually got tired of “climbing a ladder six and a half million times a day” just to get up to his house, and that led him to a great solution. Ethan constructed an amazing bicycle-powered elevator to get him to his house that’s 30 feet above the ground!

Professional Illustrator Collaborates With Her 4-Year Old Daughter (10 фото)
Not too long ago, professional illustrator Mica Angela Hendricks could not have imagined sharing her personal art projects with anyone. However, one day, when she bought a new sketchbook, her 4-year old daughter started adding her own contributions. Mica noticed that unrestrained imagination of a child allows her girl to finish the paintings in a way that the artist could never think of herself. Now the mom starts a piece by drawing a face, and the daughter finishes it up with the body she thinks to fit best. Mica never knows how they will turn out – which was tough for a perfectionist at first – but she learned to appreciate it:

Hyperrealistic Turbulent Skies Reveal the Power of Nature (8 фото)
The Kingdom is a visually stunning series by world-renowned graphic designer, photographer, and producer Seb Janiak. The images focus on massive accumulations of clouds in the sky, visually portraying the power of nature as it swirls overhead. In each composition, viewers will quickly get lost in the lively, dramatic clouds that lead directly to a bright central point. The French artist created "digital matte painting," a technique in which several images are layered together to produce one hyperrealistic photograph. In each of these compositions, he draws on that technique to create a fantasy world displayed in the turbulent skies. He focuses on nature and its mysterious forces to create each breathtaking scene. The transforming clouds reveal the changing light throughout a full day, moving from bright daylight to the shadows of moonlight that reveal twinkling clusters of stars.

London's Piles Of Rubbish Transformed Into Works Of Art (9 фото)
You’re probably familiar with the phrase “One man’s trash is another man’s gold” and there’s few better examples of that than the work of visual artist Francisco de Pajaro. Much like Clet Abraham who has fun hijacking Europe’s street signs, Francisco likes to bring a bit of life, vitality and humour to our sterile urban environments. In a recently interview with James Buxton of Global Street Art he stated that:

Surreal Illustrations Merge Dreams and Childhood Memories (16 фото)
St. Petersburg-based digital artist Alex Andreev recently unveiled the 9th installment of his ongoing series titled A Separate Reality. The collection features remarkably surreal illustrations of an alternate universe where skateboarders are guided by flying stingrays, masses of land float in the sky, and there's little difference between an enormous airplane and a monstrous octopus. Each image is brimming with elements from real-life placed in unconventional compositions, making them seem like weird yet wonderful dreams. Andreev's imaginative works borrow just as much from his own creative dreams as they do from his childhood memories. By merging these two sources of creativity, both conscious and subconscious, the artist produces entirely unique scenes. There's a sense of enthusiasm for exotic environments that think way outside the box, awarding residents of Andreev's fictional settings the freedom of free falling and diving through the clouds without a worry in the world.

Disney Princesses and Villains Illustrated as Elemental Benders (5 фото)
Texas-based artist and animator Robby Cook has illustrated Disney princesses, villains, and other characters as elemental benders from Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Jasmine is depicted as a firebender with her lightning tiger Rajah, Mulan is a member of the earth-bending Kyoshi Warrior clan, Pocahontas is appropriately an airbender, and Ariel is a waterbender. Ursula, the villain of The Little Mermaid, is a corrupted waterbender who controls Ariel through the dark art of bloodbending. To see the rest of the crossover artworks, head over to Cook’s website.

Playfully Surreal Scenes Blend Illusions with Reality (11 фото)
Photographer Oleksandr Hnatenko brings his imagination to life with this extensive collection of surreal scenes. His series, entitled S. Real, captures a strong contrast between shadows and lights to produce the visually dynamic moments. In each photograph, the Austria-based artist invites his viewers into a bizarre world filled with unique perspectives, optical illusions, and confusing spaces. By naturally blending the concrete with the conceptual, Hnatenko creates playfully contrived realities in which his subjects hide behind fish eyes and top hats, bodies magically disappear into the floor, and normal expectations are completely defied. He says, "In the search for reality, you come across many things, some that are simple, some old, some new, some that are eye-catching, in color or in monochrome, visible things and some hidden from view, some things with sense and some without…Surreal moments are born out of this."

The Secret Life of Heroes by Gregoire Guillemin (10 фото)
We've been fans of French artist Gregoire Guillemin for quite some time. In the past, we featured many of his superhero themed series such as his retro-modern superhero illustrations as well as his smooth, minimalist superhero work. Lately, Guillemin has been working on a hilarious new series called The Secret Life of Heroes. The funny and sexy illustrations feature both heroes and villains in ways we've never seen them before. Poor Mickey Mouse looks worn down and sick while smoking a cigarette while Winnie the Pooh looks like he's really enjoying that beer. The best illustrations are the ones where the hero or heroine is acting completely out of character like Disney's Ariel scarfing down some sushi.

Animal Panties With Ears (8 фото)
This is a collection of adorable panties with animal faces on the bum bum plus some BONUS ear flaps. The cutesy drawls come from Etsy shop Knickerocker and pairs start at $35 and go up from there. They’ve even got little crop tops to match each panty. Cuuute. I want the one that looks like a bear. You know, so I can still be bear assed. Then, I can be all “Hey which one of y’all wants to see my BEAR ASS?” and they’ll all think I mean “bare ass” and say “Dear God no! Take all my money, but please don’t show me your bare ass!” Man, it’ll be really funny. Sure, this whole situation is only going to end with my feelings getting hurt, but I guess I kind of asked for it.

There's a painterly quality about her work that makes the viewer question whether they're actually looking at a photograph or an oil painting. Despite having to hold their breath while being submerged in water, the characters in each frame seem unaffected by their confinement. They float through the translucent density with an ease in their motion as they bathe in their surroundings. The artistic photographer even manages to present her subjects in surreal scenes, each with their own magical narratives.

Foodscapes: Stunning Landscapes Made of Food by Carl Warner (25 фото)
Food posts are always a special treat for the eyes, but this selection of Foodscapes by London-based photographer Carl Warner is definitely something different. Yes, that’s right – all of the pictures below are actually created out of fresh foods! Artist uses a wide variety of different ingredients, such as deli meats, fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and bread, and builds entire worlds that look unbelievably realistic. His food art include ships sailing off into the horizon or battling stormy seas, the Great Wall of China, forests and mountains, and Carl demonstrates an amazing eye for even the smallest details. Carl has been working in advertising and shooting still lives for over 25 years, and has been developing his Foodscapes idea for the past 10 years already. His know-how about shooting table-top pictures and usage of artificial light has undoubtedly aided in making the food pictures look so realistic. For the most time, you can’t even tell that the miniature food models aren’t actually landscape photographs. The Foodscapes received international recognition back in 2008, and Carl has been coming up with new pieces ever since. Besides food, this artist also uses other medium to imitate landscapes. His sensual Bodyscapes project featured intricately tangled human bodies, which make you tilt your head a little with each picture.
